My Story
As I entered my 28th year in education, I decided to pause my consulting business and return to the public education sector as an administrator of a bilingual middle school that was in turnaround status. I had the audacity to believe that at the age of 50, my wisdom & years in education would serve me well to support the teachers, students & families who yearned for a better school. I was up for the challenge & excited with a plan that I had instituted and well researched in other similar school settings.
Unfortunately, the system & district appointed principal who was green to leadership had another vision that countered what I knew to be best practice and the conflict took a toll on my health. See I’m not that 20 something social justice warrior I used to be - the tenacious outspoken one who could work tirelessly at all hours to make it happen. Trust me I tried, but then I landed in the hospital. My doctor finally held my hand as I called HR while in her office to take a medical leave for fear I would have a stroke.
My health failed, it ran out because the truth is, I had endured many of life’s inevitable changes - menopause, caring for my parents as they transitioned from this earth with terminal illnesses, the loss of a career in higher education I worked 12 years to secure, becoming a mother at 41 after 30 hours of labor with a c-section, and the list goes on. All this to say, when I went on medical leave - I thought long and hard about what I wanted for my life moving forward? What will be my sunset career? What is my legacy? What will bring me the most satisfaction & peace?
Truth: I’ve always had a strong value of work/life balance (work hard/play hard). As an educator in bilingual title schools - I was an avid hiker, amateur astronomer, gardener, hot springs lover, and would spend summers backpacking with my dogs.
As a researcher & professor, I continued those habits but also became a dedicated yogi and downhill skier - you could often find me teaching online from the ski lodge and answering emails or grading. In addition I’ve become a mindfulness practitioner following the teachings of Thich Nhat Hanh & Plum Village. Attending a weekly sangha, meditating daily & going on retreats to deepen my practice. I even became an Order of Interbeing Aspirant- studying to be ordained in Plum Village tradition.
And yet, in spite of all these amazing wellness practices - the stress of my career in education as a social justice warrior still took its toll. Both my parents passed at a young age from the stress of being a workaholic - my father at 57 from lung cancer who was awarded for his humane treatment of inmates as a warden & later superintendent of Correction facilities. My mother at 71 due to complications from Alzheimer’s after declining in the care of assisted living center.
All this to say, being an older mom - I have a deep commitment not to follow my parents fate. I want to be here and healthy through my senior years to support my daughter as she grows into adulthood, becomes a mother, and reaches career & life milestones. So I’ve been taking my already vegetarian diet to new heights, working out at the gym doing strength training & ramping up my cardio workouts. Most importantly, I have engaged in several life coaching and wellness programs to learn the art of healthy habits and how to maintain work/life balance.
As a result I’ve committed to teaching others - like me - committed to LIVING A SWEETLIFE by AlCHEMIZING the healthy habits of Sweetness, Structure, and Space. A model I learned from my mentors Brianna & Dr. Peter Borten who authored The Well Life and developed the Dreambook + Planner.
